Overview
A new double concerto for two percussion and wind ensemble!
The Penn State Symphonic Wind Ensemble (Dr. Tonya Mitchell-Spradlin, director), together with percussionists Lee Hinkle and Bella Scotti, are organizing a consortium to commission a new work from composer Baljinder Sekhon: a double concerto for two percussion and wind ensemble. We hope you will consider being a part of it.
Timeline and Consortium Membership
- January 15, 2026 – deadline to join consortium
- June 1, 2026 – Work Delivered
- Consortium fee: $500.00 per member
- All consortium members will have exclusivity to perform and record this work until June 1, 2027.
- For any commercially released recordings, consortium members will have all license and rights fees waived.
- All consortium members will have their name listed in the final published score.
- The Penn State Symphonic Wind Ensemble will present the world premiere of this work with Lee Hinkle and Bella Scotti as soloists during the fall 2026 semester.
New Work Details
- Instrumentation:
- Percussion Solo Parts will consist of two vibraphones, a collection of resonant metallic instruments (bowls, bells, cymbals, and similar metallics), and a collection of drums.
- Wind Ensemble (standard instrumentation with harp and piano)
- Duration: 13-15 minutes
- Difficulty Level:
- Solo Parts: suitable for advanced performers (graduate student and beyond).
- Wind Ensemble: suitable for an upper-level university wind ensemble (Grade IV-V).

Dreamer (percussion ensemble + saxophone ensemble)
This work was originally commissioned as a ballet to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Eastman School of Music. The premiere took place in Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre with the Eastman Saxophone Project, Eastman Percussion Ensemble, and Garth Fagan Dance Company.
Remembering (wind ensemble)
This work was composed for the Penn State Symphonic Wind Ensemble and was premiered at the 2023 Penn State President’s Concert presented at Heinz Hall (Pittsburgh, PA) – Dr. Tonya Mitchell-Spradlin, conductor.
The Offering, III. Acquire Majesty (concerto for saxophone and orchestra)
This is the third movement of a concerto for saxophone and orchestra premiered by saxophonist Doug O’Connor and the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra in Bangkok, Thailand. The entire work can be heard here.
