Baljinder Sekhon, Composer

Baljinder Sekhon is a composer and percussionist who currently lives in Tampa, FL.  Sekhon's award winning music ranges from works for full orchestra to gamelan ensemble to electronic music.  Throughout this website you can listen to sound clips, view score examples and purchase sheet music. Sekhon currently teaches composition and electronic music as a faculty member of the University of South Florida School of Music.

NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Carnegie Hall

Sekhon's new choral work, There Are No Words, is complete!  This work was composed for the USF Chamber Singers and funded in part by the composer's assistance program from New Music USA. Under the direction of James Bass, the new work will be premiered at New York City's Carnegie Hall on February 25, 2013.

Upcoming Consortium

The announcement of a commissioning consortium for Sekhon to compose a new double percussion concerto for two percussion and wind ensemble will be announced soon! Stay tuned for information on this future work and how you can join the consortium.

CAP Grant from New Music USA 

Sekhon was awarded a grant from New Music USA's Composer Assistance Program to cover costs related to completing his new choral work and attending the premiere in Carnegie Hall.

ASCAP PLUS AWARD

10/1/12 - Baljinder is a recipient of the 2012 ASCAP PLUS AWARD for the third consecutive year.

Wayne Brewster Barlow Prize

4/15/12 - Sekhon was awarded the Wayne Brewster Barlow Prize from the Eastman School of Music for his saxophone concerto The Offering. Sekhon was also named a finalist in the 2012 American Prize for this work.

New Music USA - MetLife Creative Connections Grant

3/15/12 - Sekhon was composer-in-residence for a series of concerts in Wisconsin April 21-26, 2012, supported by the MetLife Creative Connections program through New Music USA. Concerts took place at University of Wisconsin (Eau Claire) and University of Wisconsin (Steven's Point) and included Twelve Virtues, LOU, Sun, and the premiere of a new version of Gradient for Saxophone + 5-player Percussion Ensemble. Soloists included Jamie Jordan, Doug O'Connor, and Natalie Spehar and the concerts were directed by Jeff Crowley and Sean Connors. CLICK HERE for more information.

MTNA-FSMTA Commissioned Composer Program

11/5/11 - Sekhon was named the MTNA-FSMTA Commissioned Composer of 2012. The resulting work, Four-Sided Life, will be premiered at the 2012 FSMTA Conference. This work is a quartet for flute, viola, percussion, and piano.

Thailand Philharmonic premieres The Offering

Baljinder's new saxophone concerto was composed for saxophonist Doug O'Connor and the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra.  The work received its world premiere on July 8th & 9th in Bangkok, Thailand.  The 22-minute work is in three connected movements: I. Abandon Yourself  II. Turn to Ash  III. Acquire Majesty.  Recordings from the premiere can be heard HERE.
